An activity that starts now and continues to a specific future time.3. When a longer action in the future is interrupted by a shorter future action. In the video below, Teauna will demonstrate these uses of the future continuous with example sentences and a timeline. English Exercise: create future continuous sentences from the incomplete sentences below.Example: What are you doing tomorrow morning? 5 Ways to Study for Science Class - TutorNerds
5 Ways to Study for Science Class - TutorNerds 5 ways to study for science class Science is fun yet a challenging topic that encompasses everything from learning how the earth was made to deciphering chemical elements to complex mathematical formulas. Students who are engaged in science and who can understand the practical applications of this knowledge are usually excited to complete a science assignment. However, because itâs a difficult subject many students reach a point where they feel overwhelmed and dont know how to proceed. There are so many ways, however, for students to study for science assignments and not every method works for every student. Each student is an individual who will need to learn and study in different ways; however science class has benefits for everyone score high on your science tests with the help of a private Irvine science tutor from TutorNerds. 1. Visual learning One way to study for science is to focus on the visual elements of learning the subject. For instance, most elementary science students will work on color coding or look at a diagram or chart within their textbook. This brings elements of science such as geology and geography to life and engages the student in the specifics of the assignment. As soon as students get older, the visual elements decrease, but they can still create their visual element by searching for diagrams or even creating their own. Charts and graphs can help students understand various mathematical elements of an advanced science class and add another dimension to their learning. 2. Practical applications Its also helpful for students to understand why theyâre learning about a particular element of science. Learning about wind patterns in a textbook might not be especially interesting on its own. However, when students learn that wind patterns can affect the local ocean current (think surfing and swimming) or how it can influence their time outdoors, they might become more interested. If students understand that chemistry is used to create some products and materials they use on a daily basis, practical applications become clear and the importance of science overall is more interesting. 3. Working outside the textbook Science is all around us, but many students dont realize that until their class is nearly over. For example, students of astronomy should have a chance to look at the stars through a telescope and understand the importance of what theyre studying. Chemistry students can apply practical skills to a cooking project, and geography students can think about all the incredible places they can travel to when theyre older. Although the textbook is paramount, going beyond the textbook is an essential way for students to be able to complete challenging assignments (READ: Cracking the ACT Science Section). 4. Vocabulary Vocabulary is an essential element to any science class. Science topics contain a ton of jargon that can be incredibly confusing to students who are not used to hearing these words. Thus, its important for students to study vocabulary and learn why the words are important rather than just memorize them for a quiz. Once students learn about root words, prefixes, and word origin it makes it a lot easier to learn about where these words come from and why theyre used. 5. Reading comprehension Strong reading comprehension is an important element to apply to any science-related topics a student encounters. There is a plethora of important and challenging information found within any science textbook so students who have excellent reading comprehension skills will find it a lot easier to get through assignments. If students are struggling a little bit with their reading, theyâre encouraged to work on this skill separately and then have someone help them apply it to science as a subject. Reading comprehension is essential to every element of learning, so its great to have a strong base. Dont fall behind in your science classes! Israel and Hamas Agree to a Ceasefire Brokered by Egypt and U.S.
Israel and Hamas Agree to a Ceasefire Brokered by Egypt and U.S. United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr announce ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.Egypt, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.(AP Photo/Egyptian State Television) After eight days of conflict, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire. The conflict began with Israel, citing rockets frequently being fired into southern Israel from Gaza, assassinating the leader of Hamas military wing, Ahmed Said Khalil al-Jabari. The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, then posted a ten second video of the pinpoint strike on YouTube and tweeted the video on their Twitter account, @IDFSpokesperson. In response to this Hamas military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades tweeted back @idfspokesperson Our blessed hands will reach your leaders and soldiers wherever they are (You Opened Hell Gates on Yourselves). This prompted a war of words to be waged on Twitter alongside the real conflict. As the fighting went on, hope was fading that an escalation into all out ground war could be avoided. President Obama, who, along with Hilary Clinton, was on a diplomatic tour of Asia, was in frequent contact with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and newly elected Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi, via telephone stressing the importance of deescalation. It is important to note that the United States did not deal directly with Hamas because Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization. Instead, Morsi was tasked with dealing directly with Hamas because he is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood party, the progenitor of the Hamas organization. The first large scale international conflict in the region since the beginning of the Arab Spring, all eyes were on Morsi to see how he would act in such a situation. President Obama had expressed a degree of apprehension about Morsi in September during an interview with telemundo saying the U.S. would not consider Egypt an ally, but we dont consider them an enemy. On Tuesday, the 20th of November, Secretary of State Clinton left Obama to finish out his diplomatic tour alone so she could fly to the Middle East and help reach some agreement. After a whirlwind of meetings, Clintons shuttle diplomacy payed off and a deal was struck. Both sides called the agreement a victory with Israel citing elimination of strategic targets and an impressive debut of their Iron Dome missle defense system and Hamas citing assurances of a slackening of the five-year Israeli blockade of Gaza. Tensions between the two countries have not cooled in the slightest. How then was a ceasefire agreement reached so swiftly? Egypts new Muslim Brotherhood President provided a new diplomatic connection to Hamas that had not existed before. Morsi was able to liaise with Hamas while Clinton spoke with Netanyahu. Clinton and Morsi were then able to work together to finalize the agreement. The ceasefire is only the beginning however. Ceasefires have been made and broken between Israel and Gaza before. If they want a longer lasting peace theyre going to have to come together and talk about their goals and demands. The situation in the Middle East continues to be tenuous despite this ceasefire, with President Morsi giving himself new power over the courts in Egypt.
How to increase engagement in your online classroom
How to increase engagement in your online classroom Online teaching is really taking off, but it can be an adjustment for teachers who are used to being in the classroom. Connecting via webcam isn't always easy! In fact, you might find that you need a completely different teaching skillset online than you would in-person. With most students taking online lessons outside regular school hours and at home (a.k.a surrounded by potential distractions!) keeping them engaged, motivated, and interested in their English lessons can be one of the biggest challenges online teachers face. So how do you motivate students online? Luckily there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you... Make sure your timing is on point Timing is really crucial in online teaching and you might find you need to break up your online lessons differently than you would face-to-face ones. As a general rule, itâs a good idea to keep a fast pace and break down information into small, easily digestible chunks. In practical terms, this means to steer clear of long-winded explanations and slides with too much text! Mixing up the tempo of your lessons by adding a variety of activity types is also a great way to make the time fly by for your students. Adapt your activities to the virtual classroom In a face-to-face class, itâs typical to give students some quiet reflection time to work alone or read a text. But these kinds of activities donât translate well in online classrooms. Long, dense texts are really difficult to read on a screen (see earlier point about breaking things into chunks ) And, silence just doesnât translate that well in virtual classroomsâ"in fact, it provides the perfect excuse for a studentâs attention to drift elsewhere! Planning activities that keep your students actively clicking, typing or talking throughout the lesson is the way to go. You can do this by asking lots of questions, including games and making sure learners have to physically do things like use drawing tools or typing in dialogue boxes. And when youâre planning your lesson remember itâs advised that as an online teacher you make sure your student has to say something every three minutes or so. Make real connections online For students studying in online classrooms, isolation can be a huge factor in making them feel demotivated. They might think that no one will notice or care if they miss a class, or find it all too tempting to not log in to the classroom if theyâre feeling tired. The best way online teachers can help remedy this is by making their students feel valued in the classroom. How do I do that, you ask? Here are some suggestions⦠Itâs a basic one, but learn your studentâs name and use their name throughout the lesson, and make sure they learn yours Follow up on what you did in previous lessons so your students know that youâre on top of what theyâre learning (and they should be too) Find out about your studentâs interests and incorporate them into the lesson where possible Give regular feedback on your studentsâ work Aim to be a positive, encouraging presence Set goals and help your students stick to them Another way to help online students stay on track with their studies and keep a sense of purpose is to set goals and remind them of their progress. Setting goals for online learners One simple way to introduce short-term goals into your online classroom is to make sure each lesson has a clear outline that you share with your student so they know where they are in the learning process and the context for any activity they are doing. Then think about how you might reward students for finishing tasks (or, even better, for working hard) during a lesson. You could try positive feedback, badges, points, playing games or doing other fun learning activities your students would like. When it comes to long-term goals, going too far into the future might not be effective, but try taking time every now and then to check in with your students and set goals together for the next month, three months, or six months down the line. Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. Progress checks for online learners For short-term progress checks, make sure you build continuity between lessons by doing quick revisions or quizzes on previous topics. A great way to remind students of their long-term progress is by building up a portfolio of work with them so they can look back themselves and see how far theyâve come. One way of doing this online is to start an achievement page. If you are teaching kids, every time they achieve something you can go to the achievement page and ask them to draw something that reminds them of what theyâve learned (you might want to make it an achievement tree they can add to or a trophy shelf.) With teens or adult learners, you might prefer asking them to write something. As the course progresses the page will fill up with reminders of successes and proud moments for your students. Use technology to your advantage! Teaching online comes with its own challenges, but it also put a whole load of really cool tools at your fingertips. Whether itâs discussion boards, pointers, virtual games, text editor, drawing tools, file editors, breakout rooms or screen-sharing tools, you can use the technology you have to add variety to your lessons and keep students on their toes. First of all, make sure you know how to use these virtual tools and take time to explain them to students so they feel confident with them too. Then think about how you might use them to liven up your lessons. For example, you could use them as a reward (there is no kid out there whose eyes donât light up at the prospect of 30 seconds of free play on a drawing tool!) or engage different senses and skills among your students. Present your best (online) self All teachers need to think about how they present themselves in the classroom. Looking neat, organized, and confident will inspire a certain amount of respect from your students. But online teachers might need to approach this slightly differently than in-person teachers... Visuals If your students can see you via a webcam make sure that not only do you look presentable, but the location youâre in does too. And thatâs just the first step! If students can see your face, itâs going to be 100 times more motivating for them if you look engaged and interested in what they are saying (even if sometimes this requires all your saintly teacher patience!) Also, itâs important that your visual materials are up to scratch, so make sure your slides look clean and clear and any videos you use are good quality. Audio A one-note lesson will quickly become boring. So try changing the tone of your voice to introduce new activities or mix up the tempo of your class. Practice different skills like telling stories, giving instructions, and giving praise out loud to see how animating your voice can make a difference. And, again, make sure any audio clips you plan to use a good quality. Finally, this might be stating the obvious, but make sure you can teach your online lessons from somewhere with a reliable internet connection. Nothing will have students switching off quicker than a crackly connection that keeps on cutting out. Bring it back to your students As a teacher, you already have plenty of practice in working out what makes your students tick. So the good news is, just like in any face-to-face classroom, the real key to getting your online students involved is to find out what motivates them and give them their own reason to be engaged in the classroom. Whether itâs music, chatting about a particular subject, connecting what youâre doing to the real world, or just being allowed to go to town on the drawing tool, donât be afraid to try different things with your students until you find something that works for them.
